Peugeot Freres Plane

A while ago my father brought me a Peugeot Freres plane from France that I did not restored yet, well until this last weekend.

Peugeot Freres plane.

This plane is made of Cormier wood (Sorbus Domestica) and it is stamped on the plane. From the stamp on one side of the plane this is a 48mm plane.

the width in mm.

The plane sole is in perfect shape.

The sole has no damage and is straight and flat.

That plane has an interesting mechanism to set the chip breaker on the blade. A screw allows to move the chip breaker/blade up and down. The head of the screw goes onto a pin at the top of a slot in the blade.

The chip breaker shows some sign of rust.

Rusty chip breaker.

I cleaned it using my usual combination of polishing compound for silverware.

Chip breaker looking better now...
...and shiny.

The blade was totally dull and looked like having been ground but never honed. The grinding made a hollow on the blade bevel. I sharpened it starting with 220 grit, followed by 1000 and 4000 then up to 8000 grit. I finally used the leather strop for final mirror polishing.

The blade sharp and clean.

I did not clean the whole blade surface but only a third of the length on the bevel end.
I put back the blade and chip breaker assembly in the plane and after few adjustment the plane was ready for a test run.

Nice curly shavings.

This plane is truly a pleasure to use. I applied some beeswax to the sole and it is rubbing incredibly smoothly on wood.

Clean and back to work.

This plane will certainly be one of my favorite from now on, I really like the feeling of wood on wood and it is cutting the wood very nicely.

  1. How do you plan to use it? Looks like it would be good one to use as a shooting plane.

    1. I didn't think about using it as a shooting plane but that is a good idea. Seeing how nice and silky the wood surface is it will certainly be a good smoother.

  2. I have a German-style wooden plane with a Peugeot Freres iron that I wrote about in January of 2017. I found it interesting that this was the same Peugeot family that eventually made bicycles and cars.

That's a nice looking plane. I've really been loving wooden planes lately. Can you tell me how long and how wide that plane is?

    1. The same family was/is making/saleing woodworking tools but also mech tools like wrenches or screwdriver and gardening tools, car, bicycles, motorcycles, and kitchen wear like knives or pepper grinder etc
This plane size is as follow:
      Length: 9"3/8
      Width: 2"1/2
      Height: 2"3/4
Mouth is at 3"3/16 from nose, is 48mm wide and its opening is 5/16.

  3. Hi! I'm from Argentina, and have found a similar peugeot freres plane likes yours. It had a dent on the edge and I sent it to re-sharpen ... but they returned it to me with the tempera colors on the blade, so I think it overheated ... I still consult because they told me that these were made with a more steel hard on the tip near the edge, and a softer one on the body ... could it still work? Unfortunately I cleaned it and the colors on the sheet are no longer noticeable, but could I send you a photo so you can tell me your opinion?
